The Cottage Is Raised

A cedar-and-stone settler cottage rises on a bend of the Lusoi, just below what will become the Mount Kenya forest belt. No electricity, no road — just river stone, thatch later replaced by iron, and a verandah that catches the evening light. The bones you still sleep within today.
